The mountain groups in the Kitzbüheler Alps are in the Eastern Alps, only a small section stretches via the slate zone / greywacke zone. Two thirds of the Kitzbüheler Alps are in Tirol, 1/3 is in the beautiful Austrian state of Salzburger Land. The Kitzbüheler Alps span from east to west - from Zillertal to Lake Zell - covering a length of some 80 kilometres. The highest summit is the Kreuzjoch at 2558 m. Other key mountains include the Große Rettenstein (2366 m,) Geißstein (2363 m), Wildseeloder in Pillerseetal (2118 m), Große Beil (2309 m), Hohe Salve (1828 m), the famed Hahnenkamm (1712 m) and the Kitzbüheler Horn (1996 m). The Kitzbüheler Alps area includes the regions of St. Johann in Tirol, Kitzbühel and the surrounding area, Pillerseetal, Brixental, the Hohe Salve holiday region, the towns in the Wilder Kaiser, Wildschönau and Alpbachtal.
